The archives of the VOC are kept at the National Archives in The Hague. They form one of the largest single collections, with over 1.2 kilometres of documents. Two main subjects can be discerned: administration overseas (mainly the so-called Overgekomen Brieven en Papieren) and the administration of the individual Chambers. The 'OBP's' consist of the administration and reports from the different factories like Surat or Makassar, which were sent annually to the governor-general and his council in Batavia. One should note that the factories of Canton and Japan are preserved separately.

The national archives also preserves other relevant material to the history of the VOC:

• - orphanage of Batavia, 1700-1790 (in which can be found the so-called 'Oostindische testamenten')
• bookkeeper-general of Batavia, 1699-1801
• criminal court of Batavia, 1664-1777
• Dutch possessions in India, 1703-1826

Last but not least there are several important personal archives, like the Collectie Hudde and many others.

In sharp contrast to the well-documented history of the VOC, the archives of the WIC are very small comprising just 100 metres. The archive is split into two periods: 1621-1674 and 1674-1791. Here as well, however, other sources outside the main archive should be considered:

• Sociëteit van Suriname, 1680-1795
• Sociëteit van Berbice, 1720-1795
• Collectie verspreide Westindische stukken, 1614-1795
• many of the archives of Dutch possessions in the Caribbean and on the Guinea coast are also separately preserved.

For both the VOC and WIC and should be aware that the local archives of the cities where the different Chambers were located still hold relevant material.

This is even more true of the factories overseas. Anyone interested in the history of New Amsterdam for instance should visit the New York State Archives in Albany for the New York Colonial Manuscripts. The history of the VOC in South Africa is largely preserved in the Kaapse Staatsargief at Cape Town.

For the commemoration in 2002 of the foundation of the VOC, a large project called TANAP has been undertaken for the preservation and accessibility of the large body of material that rests overseas at its original locations, especially in India and Indonesia.

5) For the VOC special mention should be made of international journals concerning underwater archaelogy because of its many shipwreck discoveries.
